The 3D Handbook
Overview

Choosing tools: an overview

How to pick 3D software for game environment work by cost, platform, licence, pipeline fit and job prospects, with starter kits for three budgets.

toolssoftwarelicensingcareer

Choosing tools is a trade-off between cost, the computer you own, what your target studios use, and how easily files move between programs. No single package covers the whole the game asset pipeline, so most environment artists use a small set of tools that hand work to each other.

This page explains how to weigh those factors. The detailed tables live on the category pages:

Category Page
Polygon, CAD and mobile modeling modeling software
Digital sculpting sculpting software
UV unwrapping, retopology and baking UV, retopology and baking tools
Texturing and materials texturing and material software
Game engines game engines
Level editors and blockout level editors and blockout tools
Photogrammetry and scanning photogrammetry and scanning tools
Vegetation, terrain and procedural tools vegetation and procedural tools
Reference boards, renders and portfolio hosting reference, review and presentation tools

#Five questions to ask about any tool

#1. What does it cost, and under which licence?

Licence models vary more than prices do. Learn to recognise the main types; software licensing explained explains each in depth:

  • Free and open source. Blender is released under the GNU General Public License, and anything you make with it is yours to use for any purpose (blender.org: Blender FAQ). Godot uses the MIT licence and its terms do not apply to the games you create (godotengine.org: License).
  • Free up to a revenue threshold, then royalty. Unreal Engine is free for games until lifetime gross revenue passes US$1 million; above that a 5% royalty applies (unrealengine.com: Unreal Engine licensing options).
  • Free up to a revenue threshold, then subscription. Unity Personal is free for hobbyists and small teams making games and entertainment apps; a business with more than US$200,000 in annual revenue or funding needs a paid Pro seat (unity.com: Plans & Pricing).
  • Indie licences. Cheaper commercial licences for small earners. Maya Indie requires annual gross revenue from creative work below US$100,000 (Autodesk Maya Indie). Houdini Indie has a similar US$100,000 limit for individuals and organisations (SideFX: Indie FAQs).
  • Free learning editions. Houdini Apprentice is free for non-commercial use, with renders capped at 1080p and watermarked in most formats (SideFX: Apprentice FAQs). ZBrush for iPad has a free plan with 28 brushes and no 3D export (Maxon Help: Free Plan vs Subscription Plan).
  • Perpetual licences. You pay once. Plasticity's Indie and Studio licences are perpetual and include 12 months of updates (plasticity.xyz: Plasticity FAQ).
  • Subscriptions. You pay monthly or yearly and lose access when you stop. SketchUp, for example, is sold as per-user subscriptions (sketchup.trimble.com: SketchUp plans and pricing).

#2. Does it run on your computer?

Platform support is uneven, which matters if you use macOS or Linux.

Tool Windows macOS Linux
Blender Yes Yes Yes (blender.org)
Maya Yes Yes Yes (Red Hat and Rocky Linux) (Autodesk Support)
3ds Max Yes No No (Autodesk Support)
Houdini 21 Yes Yes (Apple Silicon) Yes (several distributions) (SideFX)
ZBrush desktop Yes Yes No (maxon.net)
Plasticity Yes Yes Yes (Ubuntu) (plasticity.xyz)
Unity Editor Yes Yes Yes (Ubuntu) (Unity Manual)
Substance 3D Painter Yes Yes Yes (RHEL; Ubuntu via Steam) (Adobe Experience League)
RealityScan (desktop) Yes No No (CG Channel)

#3. Is there a student or education licence?

If you are enrolled at a school, check education plans first. Autodesk gives eligible students and educators free one-year access to products including Maya, 3ds Max and Fusion, renewable while you stay eligible (Autodesk: Education software: All products). Unity has a free Student plan for people enrolled at an accredited institution, valid for a year and renewable (unity.com: Unity Student plan). Adobe gives higher-education students and teachers a free 12-month Substance 3D licence covering Painter, Designer, Sampler, Modeler and Stager (substance3d.adobe.com: Substance 3D for education). Unreal Engine has no revenue limit for educators and schools (unrealengine.com: Unreal Engine licensing options). SketchUp sells a student subscription (sketchup.trimble.com: SketchUp plans and pricing).

#4. Does it fit the pipeline?

A tool is only useful if its output reaches the engine cleanly. Check that it exports the 3D file formats your engine and teammates use, and that it handles units, scale and axes the same way. Some tools are built to connect: the free Houdini Engine licence loads Houdini Digital Assets inside the Unity and Unreal plug-ins (SideFX: Indie FAQs).

#5. Is it still being developed?

Software is discontinued more often than beginners expect. Recent examples:

Licensing terms also change. Unity cancelled its planned Runtime Fee for games in September 2024 and returned to seat-based subscriptions (Unity Blog: A message to our community: Unity is…). Maxon moved ZBrush updates to subscriptions in 2022, which prompted some Polycount users to talk about switching tools (Polycount: ZBRUSH - All new updates to require Maxon…).

#Starter kits for three budgets

These kits cover the core of an environment pipeline. UV, retopology and baking options are on UV, retopology and baking tools. Prices were copied from vendor pages on 21 October 2026 and re-checked on 22 October 2026; "$" means the vendor did not name the currency, and "see vendor" means no price was published in a form we could read. Full price tables are on each category page.
