Learning platforms and courses

Where to learn 3D, environment art and level design beyond this handbook, from free libraries (ArtStation Learning, Epic, Unity Learn, YouTube educators) to subscriptions, paid courses, mentorships and full-time schools, with a comparison table of price models, levels and instructors' industry experience.

referencelearningcoursescareers

You can learn 3D art for games almost entirely for free, and you can also spend thousands on courses, mentorships and degrees. This page sorts the main options by how they work: free libraries, subscriptions, individual paid courses, mentorships and schools. It favours teaching by people who have shipped games, in line with the rest of the handbook.

Prices change often. This page only states a price where the vendor's own page showed it on 21 or 22 October 2026; everywhere else it says "see vendor page". Check before you buy.

#Free libraries

Everything in this section is free, and much of it is taught by working game artists.

#YouTube educators and independent creators

Short, practical videos, often by working artists. See essential talks and videos for a fuller list by topic.

#Subscriptions

A subscription gives access to a whole library for one fee. It is good value if you watch several courses a month.

Blender Studio
$17 a month, or $34.50 every three months; includes "unlimited access to trainings" and production files and logs from the Blender open projects, taught by Blender Studio artists. Beginner to advanced, paid.

#Mentorships and schools

These options give personal feedback and structure, at the highest cost.

Gnomon (school)
a four-year BFA and a two-year full-time Certificate in Digital Production for Entertainment with a Game Art emphasis, plus individual ten-week courses on campus or online, in Los Angeles. Full-time, paid (tuition).

Many universities and colleges also run game art and game development degrees. Compare them on the shipped-game experience of the teaching staff, the portfolios of recent graduates, and links with studios, not on the software list. For the topics a programme should cover, use the A 12-month learning roadmap as a checklist.
