Modeling software

A neutral directory of polygon, procedural, CAD, low-poly, browser and tablet modeling tools for game environment work, plus the Blender add-ons environment artists use most, with platforms, licence models and October 2026 prices.

toolsmodelingsoftwarelicensingadd-ons

Modeling software is where most game geometry starts: modular kits, props, blockout pieces and the low-poly meshes you bake onto. This page compares general 3D suites, procedural tools, CAD tools, low-poly and voxel editors, browser and tablet apps, and the Blender add-ons that environment artists use most.

#How to choose

Choose by the task first. If you need one tool that does modeling, UVs and export to any engine, a general suite such as Blender, Maya or 3ds Max is enough. Add a CAD tool only if you make a lot of hard-surface high-polys, and add Houdini only if you want procedural modeling. Then check three practical things: does it run on your operating system, can you afford it after any student licence ends, and do the job ads you care about ask for it. For a wider view, see choosing tools: an overview and software licensing explained; for the techniques, see ways to build a 3D model.

#General 3D suites

These cover box modeling, subdivision surface modeling, UVs and export to engines.

Houdini assets can run inside engines. Houdini Engine Indie is a separate, free, non-graphical licence, limited to three per account (SideFX: Indie FAQs). See vegetation and procedural tools for world-building uses.

#CAD and NURBS tools

CAD tools build exact curved surfaces, then convert them to polygons. Game artists use them mainly for hard-surface high-polys. See CAD and NURBS modeling for games.

Tool Best known for (env/game work) Platforms Licence model Price (as of October 2026) Free / student option
Plasticity "CAD for artists", aimed at concept artists and industrial designers (CG Channel) Windows 10+, macOS 12+, Linux (Ubuntu 22+); xNURBS Windows and Mac only (plasticity.xyz) Perpetual, 12 months of updates Indie US$175 (2 machines); Studio US$299 (4 machines, beta access) 30-day trial, no commercial use; free academic licence (Indie) on request

Shapr3D Simple CAD modeling and drafting macOS, iPadOS, Windows, visionOS (shapr3d.com) Subscription Pro US$299 billed annually, excluding VAT Free Basic plan limited to 2 projects; free one-year education licence

Plasticity is often compared with MoI and Fusion as a cheaper, artist-focused alternative (CG Channel: Nick Kallen ships Plasticity 1.4). The Indie tier lacks the xNURBS advanced surfacing found in Studio (plasticity.xyz: Plasticity FAQ).

#Blockout and architectural modeling

Tool Best known for (env/game work) Platforms Licence model Price (as of October 2026) Free / student option
SketchUp Quick architectural massing, usable for blockout; Pro adds the desktop app, LayOut and extensions (sketchup.trimble.com) Go: iPad and web; Pro: desktop, web and iPad; Studio: Windows only Per-user subscription (SketchUp Help) Go US$10.75, Pro US$33.25, Studio US$71.58 per user per month, billed yearly Students $55 a year; free SketchUp for Schools (K–12)

Check that SketchUp's export reaches your engine at the right units, scale and axes before you build a whole level in it. For in-engine blockout tools, see level editors and blockout tools.
