B
- Bake cageKey termAn inflated copy of the low poly that tells the baker where rays start and which direction they travel; averaged cages avoid gaps at hard edges, and a cage that is too large or too small causes most projection errors.
- Bake groups and exploded bakesKey termTwo ways to stop parts of a model from baking onto each other; pair each low-poly part with its own high poly by group or by name, or move the parts apart before baking, and handle the lost contact shadows.
- Baked vs. dynamic lightingTopicThe central lighting decision in any project; what baking stores, what mixed and stationary lights do, what fully dynamic systems such as Lumen cost, worked lightmap numbers, and how Call of Duty, Fortnite and Metro Exodus chose differently.
- BakingTopicTransferring detail and information from a high-poly mesh (or the low poly itself) into textures; what each common map stores and is used for, the main bakers, a reliable workflow, naming, anti-aliasing and resolution.
- Base colour (albedo) mapKey termThe texture that holds a surface's colour with no lighting in it; diffuse colour for non-metals, reflection colour for metals. Covers safe brightness ranges, measured reference values and the usual mistakes.
- Base meshes for sculptingKey termThe simple starting mesh a sculpt grows from, and the three common ways to make one - ZSpheres, rough blocks merged by remeshing, and a modeled low-poly blockout.
- Bevel shadersKey termA render-time shading effect that makes sharp edges look rounded by bending normals near them, without changing the mesh. Used in place of modeled high-poly bevels for baking and renders.
- Bevels and chamfersTopicSmall cut or rounded strips along a model's edges that catch light like real manufactured edges; built with geometry, baked from a high poly, or faked with a bevel shader.
- Bit depth and bandingKey termHow many steps a texture channel can store (8, 16 or 32 bits), why smooth normal and height maps band at 8 bits, how dithering hides it, which file formats keep the precision, and why a terrain heightmap must be 16-bit.

- Box modelingTopicBuilding a model by starting from a simple primitive and refining it with extrudes, insets and loop cuts, usually with subdivision in mind.
- BreadcrumbingKey termLeading players with a trail of small rewards, objects, lights or enemies, like the coins and bananas of a platformer. Reliable, but heavy use makes a level feel artificial.
- Breaking up tilingTopicWhy tileable materials form visible grids, how to measure the problem, and the full toolbox for hiding it, from authoring choices to shader techniques (random tile offsets, stochastic texturing, macro variation) and hand-placed breakup, with costs and shipped-game examples.
C

- Cameras, lenses and field of viewTopicHow field of view, focal length and camera height change what the player sees and how the world feels. Gameplay cameras and cinematic cameras want different settings, and engines even measure FOV differently.
- Capturing a showreel in the engineGuideHow to get clean, smooth footage of your work out of Unreal Engine, Unity and Blender: render settings, anti-aliasing, frame rate, resolution and formats, with the official documentation for each.
- Cascaded shadow mapsKey termSplitting the camera's view into distance bands, each with its own shadow map, so the sun's shadows stay sharp near the player without running out of resolution in the distance.
- Channel packing (ORM)Key termStoring several greyscale maps in the red, green, blue and alpha channels of one texture, such as occlusion, roughness and metallic (ORM). Covers the common layouts in Unreal, Unity (HDRP mask map, URP) and Godot, import settings, and the trade-offs.
- Checker mapsKey termA test texture of evenly sized squares, applied to a model to reveal UV stretching, uneven texel density, flipped islands and badly placed seams before any real texturing starts.

- Collision meshesTopicThe simplified, invisible shapes that physics and the player actually touch. How to build them from boxes, capsules and convex hulls, and how Unreal, Unity and Godot import them.
- Colour blindness and accessibilityKey termMany players cannot tell certain colours apart, so anything a player must notice needs a second cue such as shape, value, pattern, icon or sound.
- Colour for environmentsTopicUsing hue, saturation and colour temperature to set mood, separate spaces and guide players. Colour works on top of value, needs a limited palette, and must never carry critical information alone.
- Colour grading and LUTsKey termShifting the colours of the final image for mood and consistency, either with parametric controls or with a look-up table (LUT), a small 3D texture that maps every input colour to an output colour.
- Colour scriptsKey termA strip of small paintings that plans the colour and light of a whole film or game, beat by beat, so the palette follows the emotional arc.
- Colour space: sRGB and linearKey termWhy colour textures are stored in sRGB but lit in linear space, how the sRGB curve turns stored values into light, which maps must skip the conversion, and what goes wrong when the flag is set wrongly.
- Communities and critiqueReferenceWhere 3D, environment and level artists share work and get feedback (Polycount, ArtStation, The Rookies, Blender Artists, the Unreal forums, Beyond Extent, game jams and local meetups), how to ask for and give useful critique, and when public critique or a paid mentor is the better choice.
- CompositionTopicArranging forms, light and colour so the eye reads a view in the order you intend. In games, you compose for a camera the player controls, so you pick the moments that matter.
- Control cage and limit surfaceKey termThe cage is the low-resolution mesh you edit; the limit surface is the perfectly smooth shape that endless subdivision of it would reach. What you see in the viewport is usually somewhere in between.
- Convex decompositionKey termSplitting a concave mesh into a set of convex pieces so a physics engine can collide with it cheaply. How V-HACD, CoACD and the Unreal, Unity and Godot tools do it, which settings matter, and when to build the pieces by hand.
- Convex hullKey termThe tightest shape with no dents that wraps a mesh, like a rubber band or shrink-wrap. Physics engines use convex hulls as cheap, reliable collision; concave objects need several.
- Coordinate systems and handednessKey termWhich axis points up and whether the axes are left- or right-handed in each 3D tool and engine (Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Houdini, Unreal, Unity, Godot, glTF, USD), and how exporters convert between them.
- Critical pathKey termThe minimum or main route a player must take to finish a single-player level, also called the golden path. Everything else is optional space that should feed back into it.

- Draw callsKey termA request from the CPU to the GPU to draw something; their number, driven by objects and materials, often limits performance before triangles do.
E
- EdgeKey termA straight line between two vertices. Edges outline faces, form loops, and decide where shading and UVs break.
- Edge creaseKey termA sharpness value stored on edges (or vertices) that tells subdivision to keep them sharp for some or all levels, instead of adding support loops.

- TopologyTopicHow a mesh's vertices, edges and faces are connected; "good" topology depends on whether the mesh will deform, be subdivided, be baked or be rendered as it is.
- TriangleKey termA face with three vertices. The only polygon a GPU draws, always flat, and the unit game budgets are measured in.
- TriangulationKey termSplitting quads and n-gons into triangles. Every mesh is triangulated before the GPU draws it; doing it yourself, before baking, keeps shading and normal maps consistent.
