Pivot point (origin)

The point an object is positioned, rotated and scaled around; where you put it decides how easily the asset snaps, sits and moves in the engine.

foundationsexportmodular

The pivot point is the point an object rotates and scales around, and the reference point you move it by. Epic's documentation describes a mesh's pivot as "the point that rotation and scaling use" (Unreal Engine 5.8 Documentation: Edit Pivot Tool in Unreal Engine). Blender calls the same idea the object origin (Blender 4.5 LTS Manual: Object Origin).

#Why it matters

The pivot decides what happens when someone uses your asset. If it is in the wrong place, a level designer cannot snap a wall to the grid, a crate floats or sinks when placed, and a door spins around its middle instead of swinging open.

The pivot does not have to be inside the mesh. Epic notes that "the pivot point can be inside or outside an actor" (Unreal Engine 5.5 Documentation: Transforming Actors in Unreal Engine).

#Where to put it

Asset type Usual pivot position Why
Props that sit on the floor Centre of the base The asset lands on the surface when placed
Modular walls and floors A bottom corner, on the grid Pieces snap edge to edge on the grid
Doors, lids, hatches On the hinge line Rotation opens it like the real object
Wall-mounted items (signs, lamps) The back face, where it meets the wall It sits flush against any wall
Characters Between the feet, on the floor It stands on the ground at the world origin

For characters, one export checklist says to model with the "feet on the floor at the origin" and to apply all transforms before export (Cinevva: Blender to Unreal Engine Export Checklist…). For modular pieces, keep your modeling grid in multiples of the engine's grid, so a pivot on a grid corner snaps cleanly in the engine (Polycount: Way early stages of a project, planning out…).

Top-down view of two doors in wall openings. On the left, an orange pivot dot sits on the hinge end; a dashed quarter arc shows the door swinging open to 90 degrees. On the right, the orange pivot dot sits in the middle of the door; a dashed circle shows both ends sweeping around, and the rotated door crosses the wall line into both rooms.
The same 90° rotation with two pivot positions. Only the hinge pivot behaves like a real door.Diagram by the handbook author

#Pivots on a production kit

On a large modular kit, pivots stop being a per-asset choice and become a team decision. Joel Burgess, whose Bethesda GDC talks on Skyrim's kits are covered on modular kits, lists "pivot point location, base footprint size, and transition metrics" among the decisions that can be a disaster to change late (80 Level: Building Huge Open Worlds: Modularity, Kits &…): every piece already placed in every level would have to move.

Walls with thickness have no single correct pivot. In a Polycount thread on interior walls, the original poster wanted thickness on both sides of the grid line, like The Sims 4, and found that edge or corner pivots then need separate inset and outset variants of wall furniture (Polycount: Interior wall pivots, center on edge or stick…).

#Common mistakes

  • Leaving the pivot at the world origin while the mesh is far away. The asset appears metres away from where it was dropped.
  • Unapplied rotation and scale. In Blender, apply rotation and scale (Ctrl+A) so they reset before export (KatsBits Blender Knowledgebase: FBX rotation fix for Unity).
  • Inconsistent pivots across a kit. If half the walls have a corner pivot and half a centre pivot, nobody can snap them together.
